Client Stories

Only 13% of perspective clients interviewed are accepted into the Our Family program. Clients must demonstrate a real desire for self sufficiency. They have to agree to follow a written plan managed by a case manager. Below is a summary of some of those families.
Client A

This single mother with an eleven year old son came to "Our Family" requesting assistance to help her continue in the nursing program at the local community college.  She comes from a close-knit family willing to support her with babysitting and other means, but was not in the position to help her financially.  "Our Family" contributed to her college tuituion, books, rent and utilities until she graduated.  She is now a licensed practical nurse and financially supporting herself.  She is the first in her family to graduate from college.  The younger members of her family are looking to her as a role model.

Client B

This young mother is supporting herself, her children and her 17 year old sister who suffers from multiple health issues which requires dialysis three times a week.  They were just getting by on the mother's $21,000 salary until her sister's Medicaid benefits were reduced.  This put the family in a financial bind, including becoming delinquent on her mortgage payments and unable to afford childcare while she worked during the summer.  "Our Family" assisted her in making the mortgage payments and paying for childcare while they referred her to a job placement organization which found her a better paying position within her company.  Also, working with the Community Legal Services, her sister's social security and Medicaid benefits were increased.  This young mother is now making it on her own.

Client C

This thirty-seven year old mother with three teenage children is now a Respiratory Therapist supporting her family on her own, but it was tough getting there.  She worked hard putting herself through school and holding a job at the same time.  Even her children worked part-time while in school, but they could not quite make it financially.  The family was behind in the mortgage payments and utilities and then the car, needed for work and school, broke down.  "Our Family" got the car fixed and participated in paying living expenses until the mother graduated with her Associate of Science Degree.  With the degree she secured a "living wage" job.  What a difference a helping hand and an education make!
