“Our Family” was developed by a small group of New Smyrna Beach residents who recognized that a long-term approach was needed to assist families in breaking out of the cycle of poverty.
The operation was started in April, 2006 in New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill. In this brief period of time “Our Family” has assisted twenty-six families find their way toward independence by offering a hand-up. Twenty-two of these families have succeeded in making it on their own through work and or education. For example “Our Family” has:
-
Assisted two clients to complete their nurse’s training;
-
Helped a client become a fulltime teacher for Volusia County;
-
Supported a mother to become a certified substitute teacher;
-
Backed a client while she became a certified phlebotomist; and
-
Is presently supporting two clients as they work and go through the local community college.
“Our Family” clients are single mothers/fathers or two parent households who meet the “Our Family” criteria of working full time and/or attending school. Each family must have at least one child under the age of eighteen living in the home. Families must be living on their own or with relatives.
A variety of financial assistance is offered ranging from child care, transportation needs, living expenses, medical expenses as well as educational and job training support.
Clients work with case managers to develop budgeting, time and family management skills. The client partnership with “Our Family” includes financial support but also personal support. Sometimes a good listener with objective recommendations is needed.
“Our Family” continues to look for clients who live in the New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, Oak Hill areas. And, we continue to look for generous people who believe that by offering a hand up to one family, we help all families in our community.
